Science Scoring Guide/ Proficiency Scale
All of DaVinci Science classes use a proficiency scale. All 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are scored on this same scale. Encourage your student to:
- Work hard in class
- ask specific questions about each lesson to deepen learning.
- Read each assessment carefully and ask specific questions to help make sure they understand the assessment.
- Take time to thoroughly answer/complete the assessment task.
- Be careful.
- Ask a peer and an adult to give you detailed feedback about your response, to make sure you answer the question being asked.

SYNERGY GRADE-BOOK - Things to know about proficiency grading.
- To read the grade book, look at the ASSIGNMENTS VIEW to see the target or standard being assessed. They will be listed as HP, PR, CP, or DP scores.
- WORK IS ONLY FINISHED WHEN THE SCORE IS PR (or higher).
- Students may revise any work until one week before the end of the quarter. (However, if they need to revise, they will not have time left in the quarter to do this)
- Students should strive for proficiency under each standard by completing assessments fully and correctly.
- The science grade book starts over each quarter.
- Missing work will count against a student's final grade if there is not evidence of a skill or concept they are working to demonstrate their level of proficiency.
- If an assignment is missing, during the quarter you will see MI for Missing, but ONE WEEK BEFORE the end of quarter you will see DP for Developing Proficiency along with MI, and their overall score will change.
- Late work is not marked down, but you can easily forget you have missing work and your work will pile up. Be on top of what you need to turn in. If you are turning something in late, schedule when you will finish it in your planner.

Detailed
Highly Proficient (HP) - 3.6 or more total points
- Student has given significant effort or has much previous experience to show beyond mastery work.
- Student ability and/or understanding of the science target goes above and beyond in some significant way. This work should be equivalent to 8th grade work and above.
PROFICIENT (PR) - 2.60 to 3.59 points
- Student has a large amount of experience and can show skill and understanding with no additional teacher guidance.
- Student work completely and correctly demonstrates ability and/or understanding of the science target.
Close to Proficient (CP) - 1.70 to 2.59 points
- Student has had moderate practice in a skill or concept, but because of limited experience, student work lacks strength in supporting knowledge with detailed evidence.
- As a result, Student work correctly and nearly completely demonstrates ability and/ or understanding of the science target.
Developing Proficiency (DP) - 1.69 or fewer total points
- Student is beginning to practice a skill or understanding of a concept and so has spent very little time on mastery. As a result, student demonstration of understanding or skill is significantly incomplete.
- Or student shows misunderstanding in some significant aspect of the science target.
